Upma Sooji (Cream of Wheat) Recipe by Manjula

INGREDIENTS:
RECIPE FOR 2 SERVINGS
½ cup sooji (rava, semolina flour)
2 tablespoon oil
½ teaspoon black mustard seed
½ teaspoon cumin seed
20 peanuts
1 chopped green pepper
½ teaspoon salt
¼ cup green peas
1 cup and 2 table spoons of water
½ teaspoon fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoon chopped cilantro

Hi,
I felt the same about it as I come from south too. At home, my mom adds curry patta and not hari corriander for upma. She would roast them very light till the raw smell goes away and instead of peanuts (we use that in Tamarind rice), she always uses cashews. She adds ginger and green chillies for sure and sometime potatoes, string beans, onions and or tomatoes. And, we would add lemon juice just before serving. Anyway, Manjulaji’s recipe is very appealing and looks great:)

hi everybody, esp south indian people. is it only me, who is finding this recipe of upma a bit different or other people have also noticed. I am not saying there is anything wrong with manju aunty’s recipe, lekin, after the peanut stage, i fry pyaaz ,a bit of ginger, then add water. when the water comes to boil, i slowly add soji. at the end i add dhaniya. anyway, there r different ways of making any dish.

Manjula, when you say “green pepper” I think you mean green chili; sometimes you use these terms interchangably. People in the US think of “green pepper” as sweet peppers. Nevertheless, I LOVE your cooking and can’t wait to make this recipe as upma is one of my favorites.
