Rural house with a septic tank – how to keep the bathroom clean?

I’ve moved to a rural area with a septic tank instead of a mains sewer.

I am not sure what chemicals I can use together because I don’t want the tank to build up poisonous or explosive fumes.

What is the best way to keep the toilet clean safely.

I don’t see why septic tanks are unique to Ireland, and think you might get some better answers if you posted in the Home and Garden section.

Personally, I use a combination of everything the local shops sell and have never had any problem.

Anyway to answer the question, I’d have to say the only way to keep the toilet really clean would be to sh*t in the hot press.

  1. Build an outhouse for number 2.

  3. we have a septic tank. i use mainly bleach and comet. the only advice i got moving in was– use liquid detergent in dishwasher and washing machine. evidently, those powders if not dissolved properly can build up in lines and cause problems. also use monthly rid-x (about 10 bucks or so, there are multiple uses in box or bottle–read it) or you can use packets of yeast (dont know much about it, excpet it is supposedly as effective as rid-x but cheaper)…..you can put the rid-x in toilet or sink. oh and dont flush tampons or toilet paper. that will cause huge problems. i dont think it is going to explode.

  4. Read the directions on the container. In the US, at least, it tells whether it is safe for septic tanks. Be sure to add enzymes to the tank (you flush them down the toilet) to keep it operating smoothly.

Edit: Can’t imagine why anyone would say NOT to flush toilet paper. I have had septic tanks most of my life and never had a qualm about sending the TP down the drain. Never had a problem! That is what the enzymes or yeast are for. They dissolve the paper. Do not flush tampons, pads, or paper towels.

  5. I used to live in a rural area, was a pain. Just don’t flush any weird things down the toilet or else it will clog up the septic and it will backup into your yard. We just used regular toilet bowl cleaner and this other product which I can’t remember the name of, but I think it was specifically for septic tanks. You used it like once a month and it cleaned it all out.
