Rural Alaska: Why do I live here?

Filmed in Shungnak, Alaska (north of the Arctic Circle) and set to music, villagers are asked why they enjoy living there. At the end of the 4-minute film, you’ll start to understand why they choose to live there, too. Filmed by Krista Galyen.

UPDATE: Warner Brothers has complained and so the audio is no longer available on this particular YouTube video…unfortunately that also gets rid of all the interview audio as well. :(

Duration : 0:5:19

My daughter and family moved from Fairbanks to Kotzebue last month, it’s been a difficult adjustment but they are slowlyl settling in. It’s only for 2 years. I love Alaska (lived there for 12 years) but you couldn’t pay me to live in the bush, although when I talked to my daughter she told me that a lot of people really like it there. I won’t ever have the money to come and visit her but I wouldn’t mind, I’d love to see Kotzebue (only in the summertime!)

  10. Alaska is a awesome …
Alaska is a awesome place to live, but also unique in so many ways. I lived there for 19 years and miss it so much. My parents still live there and are moving to a small village about that size to a place called kotzebue. The one thing i miss the most about alaska is the peace, calm, quite, wild, landscapes. Like the newyorker said sick of the sirens, news, people, especially traffic jams. Anchorage still has bad jams, but if you live outside of anchorage it’s not so bad. I miss it.

    To Mrs.Galyan: I …
To Mrs.Galyan: I just mapped Shungnak and discovered how truly rural this village is! The furthest north I got was Elmendorf! Not north enough..your video was a great production and a wonderful example to the world of rural life in Alaska. It must be a challenge to live in a so isolated place, but I could understand the appeal it would bring. Thank you for sharing your wonderful video. It is a beautiful place.

If you ever need a pal, you have me to say hello with.
