JET Program placement – Rural vs Semi-Rural vs Urban Japan
Congrats (omedetou!) to all those JET hopefuls who found out in April 2010 that they will be going to Japan this summer. Most of you will find out in May where in Japan you’ll be going and what type of school you’ll be teaching at (if you’re going to be an ALT).
This video discusses the pros and cons of living in an urban vs. semi-rural vs rural area. I could talk at length about this subject and I think this video just scratches the surface, so feel free to continue the discussion over in the forums at http://japanjuku.com
I’ve made videos in the past covering the differences in teaching at elementary vs Jr High vs high school, so look for those here on YT.
And check out my buddy Chris’ site and podcast at http://www.japantics.com/
Thanks for watching!

I’ve heard of a lot …
I’ve heard of a lot of JETs eventually getting a car while they’re in Japan. How difficult is that? Like getting the license….buying the car….etc? I know one JET from the college I’m going to (same club) and when he came back during winter break, he used to joke around that he learned how to drive stick and on the left side of the road in Japan.

@drhikarisan DIY = do it yourself – there is a big chain in Shimane/Japan called Juntendo – it;s like a Home Depot type store with hardware and stuff for making your house better, etc

hey Jason, I just want to say thank you for all your videos and awesome posts. I’ve enjoyed watching these and they’ve been very inspirational while i was going through my JET journey. I found out last week that i’ve officially been selected on the short list as an ALT so i’m super excited to go to Japan this summer! Thanks again and you’ve inspired me to begin posting my own vlogs and to create a BLOG of my own adventures!

thanks for another awesome video jason! I’ve been watching your videos for the past 6 months and I’m happy to say that I’m one of the lucky shortlisters for 2010! I love making movies as well and I’m really looking forward to making videos of my time in Japan like you did. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to share them with the youtube community!

I think living in a …
I think living in a rural area would be great, but I don’t know how long I could stay away from at least a 2 hour drive to a big city. I have lived in Houston, Texas and currently live in Orlando, Florida. Don’t get me wrong, when I apply to JET and get accepted (hopefully) and I get placed in a rural area I will not complain because I have seen many of your videos and can see how beautiful rural life can be. I, however, do enjoy concerts, bars (not clubs), good restaurants, etc. =)

Thanks for all your help Jason but unfortunately I’m an alternate. I’m completely distraught and not holding my breath for the upgrade. Fingers crossed I get a call, if I do, you’ll hear the scream from London! Unfortunately I fear that the JET Programme is dying to more cheaper ways of employing ALTs (dispatch companies)…
@sargeantscigar …
@sargeantscigar almost every JET I’ve known has been supplied with a bike (not a great bike BTW, but a mami-chari with a basket) when they first got to Japan – it’s a very common mode of transport for adults too

You talk about a bike in your video, just wondering if you mean that they supply you with a free bike? Because that would be awesome!
Yea they are …
Yea they are cutting the JET ALTs in Kanagawa because of the quick availability of foreigners. There are 11 of us here now and 1 CIR. 5 are leaving and they are replacing 2 of the positions.
I love my placement, but I regret not requesting a more rural area. Because of the commonness of gaijin, I am nothing really special. Just another person. It is also much harder to take part on traditional culture activities because of the big melting pot of Tokyo ^_^ Enjoy the ruralness is what I can say!
