How do you prevent bugs from getting into your grain?

I’ve found bugs in my couscous and had to toss it out. I kept the couscous in the cardboard box package it came in. Should I store all my grain and flour in glass containers now? Or is there a way to repel bugs from your grain? Maybe add a dried orange peel or a cinnamon stick? Something?

We keep our grains in closed containers (for those we buy in bulk) or put the box they came in into a plastic sip-top bag before putting it in the cabinet.

  2. Just use air tight containers and it should eliminate all insects from your pantry. Good luck

If it’s the flour weavels or whatever they’re really called (little white worms with rings) the ones that leave shells everywhere, try bay leaves. Not the shreaded stuff in shakers but actual whole leaves. They can usually be found on the same shelves as the ones in shakers.

To be safe, I keep my flour in a plastic sealable container with a bay leaf taped to the top. (on the inside of the container)

I have this problem too. I have tried bay leaves, peppercorns, peppermint gum.. etc. Really the only success I have had comes with sealing everying up in air tight containers and even having to store some things in the freezer.

  5. All grains are best stored in air tight containers. Other answers have all given good suggestions. These containers are best kept in a cool, dry area. If you have had an invasion of any type of "bug" in your grains, you should wipe down the inside of your cabinets w/ a mild bleach solution (1-3 Tbs. chlorine bleach to 1 gal. water) to destroy any eggs that may have been deposited by stray bugs. You may find that you are still getting insects in grain products, especially wheat and corn products, even when stored in air tight containers. Some insect nits (eggs) are nearly always present in wheat flour, corn meal etc. In warm areas these nits will develop into weevils or other insects. If this happens you will need to store the products in the refrigerator or freezer. You should be storing whole grains under refrigeration anyway to keep the oils in the germ fresh.

the only way is to put them in sealed containers or bags and put them in the freezer. if you put spices or something inside it could give a weird taste or even make them go off.
