All Grain VS Extract The Debate is Over

The debate between extract vs. all grain is over. These are two totally different ways of making beer, and they will yield different results. But, the fact is, most beginners don’t want a complicated procedure. If they gain confidence from kit brewing, they are likely to go on to more advanced methods. Extract brewing has it’s place in the arena, and there is no debate as far as I’m concerned.

You have inspired me to bring brewing. I am first batch was with an extract kit and now I am making a mash tun and will attempt an all grain batch next. Thank for introducing me to the hobby. PS I love the singing vids as well!

Craig, I’m a new subscriber and I love your videos.
I’m about to get started in all this and found your channel by chance.
There’s no doubt that I will be able to get started with confidence that I wouldn’t have had before seeing your clips.
No question you are a great guy and you’ve got the support from me over in the south of England.
All the very best and don’t let the idiots bring you down.

    Cheers!!

yah craig you helped me make awsome beer from a can keep on truckin

  6. I agree with you …
I agree with you craig. I started w/ a $20 mr. beer kit….now i malt my own barely, grow my own hops and keg my beer n i’ve just been brewing just a little over a year. but people gettting about extracts is dumb. that’s like me gettting at guys that dont malt their own barley? or grow their own hops? or bottle their beer? losers. if extracts work, do it. i believe in my system. The real ‘enemy’ is the big beer co.s and the alcohol tax and both grain and extract brewers win

    @shrekfx1 I may …
@shrekfx1 I may be misreading your comment, but I’m not sure what ‘Mr. Beer powder’ is… Mr. Beer is LME, not powder. It’s extract brewing. Same thing as the HME at the LHBS, except in smaller cans. I do LHBS extracts these days with some partial mash, but did do some Mr. B when starting out, but really it’s the exact same thing. Also, he readily acknowledges in this vid that a properly done all-grain is likely better than the extract.

  8. @shrekfx1 As far as …
@shrekfx1 As far as the Cooper’s kits, if you like a particular type, you just brew it and you know exactly what you’re going to end up with because you’ve made it before. At the end of the day, you get a beer that you like. I don’t have any control when I buy a case of beer either, but Cooper’s is way cheaper, and it works.

  9. @shrekfx1 I’m not …
@shrekfx1 I’m not sure where I said that a kit tastes better than all grain. I mention in many of my videos that all grain is the best as far as control and quality. This video series is 3 years old.

  10. The way it works is …
The way it works is you have your Mr. Beer powder. Coopers (canned) extract kits. Extract (DME/LME) with grains, partial mash, then all grain. Its all control. But we dont like how you say coopers taste better then all grain. But dont forget that you are mocking and criticizing all the all grain brewers out there. So you are no better then a lot of the all grain brewers.

  11. The debate will …
The debate will never be over. We are not saying all grain is the only way to go. All we are saying is you have more control over your finished beer. I’ve done extract brewing and it makes great beer and extract is the way to go for beginners. Only issue is the Coopers kit. You have no control over that at all. Extract with grains, you have a lot more control, and all grain you have full control. And extract with grains kits comes with everything pre-messured and ready to go.

  12. Don’t pay attention …
Don’t pay attention about what the idiots say… it’s because of your videos that I got started of homebrewing and soon I’ll get my homebrew kit so I can post my very first homebrewing video. Keep posting more good videos and keep helping people and f**k the idiots…Cheers!

  13. you and another …
you and another user here on youtube called mieses2pieces got me started in the home brewing hobby, and i started out with extract, i made a few batches that was drinkable but not as good as the local beer here in Iceland, and not long ago a brewing factory here started selling grain to hobbyists and i gave it a try and am making great beer :) , thanks for your help in the past and happy brewing :) , and yeah i still watch your videos, keep up the good work :)

    Craig you have it …
Craig you have it exactly right! I started precisely the way you described. I did great Mr. Beer Kits, I did Fantastic DME kits from the local Brew supplier, and now I’m ready to get creative and venture into deeper waters. I have had splendid results from each of the styles I’ve tried so far and will likely never make more Whole grain brews than kits. Can you recommend a good resource for Blow-by-Blow whole grain process instructions. The tiny little shiv I have is not enough :)

  15. it’s never over. i …
it’s never over. i say make beer how ever you want to.

  16. @conduct623 that is …
@conduct623 that is good news. To think that some would condemn kit brewing in the face of the “arts”, Yet you are there because of it. That’s the story of the year. Happy brewing always!

  17. great video craig, …
great video craig, i started with mr. beer, and i didn’t even know that 5 gal. batch brewing even existed untill i saw your easy home brewing videos. now i’m doing all-grain. thank you.

  18. @wkawk2416 Thanks …
@wkawk2416 Thanks for your faith. I can’t fix a fridge without being able to have my hands on it. Could be the compressor motor, a leak in the lines, a bad start up capacitor.. etc. I wish I could help more.

  19. hey, craig my …
hey, craig my fridge on my basement is broken. can you help me to fix it? the model number is BebeSounds MF104 Portable Mini Fridge. Like you said, you will be always there fore me. and I really need your help. The power seems to be on but it doesn’t get colder and I want to drink colder beer. I HATE warm beer.. So please help me craig.. I really need your help and people on youtube and myself believe you will help me on this.. Thanks. you are the man.

  20. Oops, posted my …
Oops, posted my last post before watching the whole video….looks like you already knew the reason. Well, I agree!

  21. Why do the beer …
Why do the beer snobs try to pee on extract brewing’s parade? IMHO, because of a personal insecurity. Ever heard of ’small man syndrome’? They feel insecure about themselves and want to feel superior to others in some way. Their brewing ’stature’ becomes that way. I really do think they are trying to make up for some perceived inadequacy in their own emotional/physical life. You see it in every field, not just brewing, and the root cause is usually the same – insecurity. Just my 2 cents.

  22. Craig, I’m yet …
Craig, I’m yet another person who got started brewing BECAUSE of your videos. I got the Coopers kit and really enjoyed it. I moved up to mini mash and really enjoyed that. I move up to all grain and really enjoy it. I am completely with you that all grain is NOT the only way to make great beer. I made dozens of kit brews before going to AG and some were very, very good. We REALLY appreciate what you have done for us! Just let the criticism comments from the Upidy Bupidy slide off your back!

  23. @flyboy2233 That is …
@flyboy2233 That is fantastic. Just have fun with it and do what works. We can all get along. That’s what it’s all about. Cheers’n'beers!

  24. Craig, it was your …
Craig, it was your videos that got me started in home brewing. After watching your video I bought a kit, and it tasted great. The experience was so good, that I have since moved to all grain. I have spent over $800 dollars on equipment. Home brewing is my second love. If some had told me I had to spend $800 dollars to make my own beer, I would have never done it. Thank you for INTRODUCING me to home brewing!

    You are spot on …
You are spot on craig! The reason these snobs look down on extract brewers is because they’re jealous that Joe Soap can turn on the internet, watch a 10min video, buy a single kit in a can and a few bits of equipment and in a few weeks, bottle something to the same quality as the method that has consumed months or maybe years of their lives trying to perfect! Well said and thanks for all the vids!
