A SURPRISE TESTIMONY ABOUT MY LIFE

It’s always important in rural life to get to know your neighbors. Visit each and every one of them. Besides the USDA, 4-H, and the agriculture people in your county, they will be your biggest help.

Perhaps you can start by leasing your land for someone else’s cows, and just have a few there that are yours, and work out some kind of deal with him. Gradually you get more of your own out there.

You will need someone to help take care of your cows once you decide which breed, and they can help you with finding someone. You might do as my dad did and pay the guy something each month to help you out. In winter you’ll have to purchase hay and get your guy to haul it and distribute it for the cows. One pasture might be fenced off to grow your own hay, maybe the guy can bale it for you and sell some. If you’re really eager and hands-on, you work beside the guy helping out and learn all you can until you can take over.

The cows will need a vet. You need a stud bull, either purchased or rented, and when the calves are born, after awhile you sell the calf. Sometimes you buy or sell a cow and calf together. Someone will need a cattle trailer and see about the cow selling and buying. The calves will need special calf food and a special feeder (so the grown cows can’t eat it all up.) Sometimes the heifers are put into a separate pasture to keep them away from the bull until they’ll old enough.

Have you got several pastures already fenced? I hear that horse fences are not the same as cattle fences.

You might need a water well. That costs money too. Does your land have any utilities or a house? How about a barn?
