In 1943, he struck out on his own with his own radio program on WSM. Soon he had a recording contract in his own right and a regular hosting spot on the Grand Ole Opry with “Cattle Call” as his theme song.

@pegcage I say the same thing about Dwight Yoakum. I am not trying to compare them, mind you, but as far as being able to play to, captivate, and hold an audience, Dwight is great. One of the last truly talented country singers in this day and age.

  6. I saw him in person …
I saw him in person one time. There are entertainers and then there are great showmen. Eddy was one of the latter. He held the audience in the palm of his hand!

    I seem to remember …
I seem to remember this being the theme for his radio show. I loved that show when I was little. My mom used to say that if I missed it I’d cry. When I finally saw him on TV I was SO disillusioned. He didn’t look anything like what I’d imagined. I still loved him, tho’. When he was on TV I’d just keep my eyes closed. :D

    I really love this …
I really love this version the most. The opening sounds like a western angel orchestra, while Eddy croons it. Even during the middle part where the choir joins in, to the very last lonesome sounding yodel at the very end. So majestic and angelic; This was truly made in Heaven was it not, folks?

  19. this is western …

This song compliments the rugged cowboy that I know lives inside me—if the women could only see it!

  24. This is the version …
This is the version he recorded in the mid fifties with an orchestra. It stirred a lot of controversy in country music circles at that time. Country music purists blasted it. I loved it! Today it sounds real country compared to modern “country” music!
