    What do they mean when they say grain is opposite of shadow on the putting green?

    Posted by admin on February 27th, 2010 and filed under grain | 3 Comments »

    I dont know the whole concept of down grain or against. How can knowing the grain of a putting green surface make a difference in your putting?

    CK is right and to add…it also greatly effects your putts break.

    How important is it to paint with the wood grain, not against it?

    We are painting some corn hole boards for my dad’s birthday present. They are made of plywood and 2×4s. We did a coat of tinted primer and are now in the process of about a million coats of red…every time we let them dry, we end up with a ‘roller spot’ about 1/2 way down because they are too long to do a whole swipe.

    I was just wondering if we could do the finishing stroke on the 2′ side (which would be against the wood grain) or will that mess them up?

    If you’re using a roller and already have several coats on, it should be fine. Going with the grain matters when using a brush because of brushmarks, but not much with a roller.

    When can i start feeding whole grain cereal with fruit?

    Posted by admin on February 23rd, 2010 and filed under grain | 4 Comments »

    My son is 14 weeks and i’ve only been breastfeeding the whole time. He’s gained an intrest in what i’m eating and he get’s so excited everytime i eat and he opens his mouth. So 2 days ago i got single grain cereal and he’s really enjoying it. When can i feed him the whole grain with fruit? It seems like it would be better than this runny stuff i’m giving him now.

    14 weeks is far too early for ANY solids. Solids are best started at, or after 6 months, and NEVER before 4 months (17 weeks.) Even if he’s ‘excited’ … he can’t yet digest solid foods, and they put him at high risk for allergies. (And if it has to be runny for him to eat it, then he’s clearly NOT ready to eat solid food off a spoon.)

    Put the cereal away and keep nursing your baby. In another couple of months, you can try again.

    How should I mill a burl to maximize the grain?

    Posted by admin on February 21st, 2010 and filed under grain | 1 Comment »

    I am making pens and acquired a rough Olivewood burl that has been dried. it is about 3 inches wide, a foot long and a foot tall. Where is the most decorative grain to turn the best pens with?

    I’m not sure exactly what you mean, but, I too make pens occasionally when I get a nice piece of wood with a lot of grain. The burl that I get is usually much to large to cut up for pens so I make bowls or cups. I’ve never had any olivewood so I really can’t say too much about it.

    How much would grain storage bins be worth?

    Posted by admin on February 17th, 2010 and filed under grain | 1 Comment »

    We’re in the process of buying a farm house and some acreage that has 6 grain storage bins sitting on it. We don’t foresee having any use for them. Would it be possible to rent them out, or even sell them to someone to take them away? How much money, if any, would it be possible for us to get by

    The property is in central Illinois, if that helps…

    Sure it’s possible to rent or sell them. Value would depend on age and size. Are they round metal bins? You could probably get some good info at your local grain elevator. They also probably have a bulliten board you could advertise them on.

    Just a guess, but if they are "average sized" metal bins in good shape they are probably worth between 3-6K each.

    I am after grain free bread and cake recipes?

    Posted by admin on February 14th, 2010 and filed under grain | 5 Comments »

    I am finding it hard to find recipes for bread [and cake but to a lesser degree] that do not contain any grain product. There are many unleavened recipes. I would like to make a decent not heavy or gluggy loaf and wonder if it is possible. Appreciate any knowledge from readers.

    Whole Grain Bread

    INGREDIENTS:

    * 16 oz. pkg. hot roll mix OR 4 cups Homemade Mix plus 1 pkg. dry yeast
    * 1 cup quick cooking oats
    * 3 Tbsp. wheat germ
    * 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
    * 1-1/4 cups hot water
    * 2 Tbsp. butter, softened
    * 2 eggs

    PREPARATION:
    Grease a 2 quart casserole dish. In a large bowl, combine flour mixture from mix with the yeast from foil packet, oats, wheat germ, and brown sugar and mix well to combine. Add hot water, butter and eggs and beat until well mixed.

    The batter will be sticky. Place in prepared casserole, cover, and let rise in warm place for 30-40 minutes.

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake bread for 30-40 minutes, until bread sounds hollow when lightly tapped with fingers and bottom crust is golden brown. Immediately remove from casserole and let cool on wire rack.

    ————-Whole Grain 7-Up Cake

    Cake
    1 cup light margarine, softened
    1/2 cup shortening
    3 cups sugar
    1 teaspoon vanilla
    1/2 teaspoon almond extract
    3 eggs, room temperature
    1/3 cup egg whites
    1 tablespoon egg whites
    3 cups whole wheat flour or brown rice flour
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 cup soda pop (7-Up)
    Glaze
    1/4 cup soda pop (7-Up)
    1/2 cup sugar

    1. Preheat oven to 300°F Spray 10" tibe pan with non-stick cooking spray. Lightly coat with flour.
    2. Combine margarine, shortening, sugar, vanilla and almond extract with electric mixer. Beat 5 minutes until light and fluffy.
    3. Gradually add eggs & egg whites, beating well after each addition.
    4. In separate bowl, combine flour and salt. Add to margarine/sugar mixture alternately with 1 cup 7 UP, beating well after each addition.
    5. Spoon batter into pan. Bake 1 hr 45 minute.
    6. Cool in pan on rack 10 minutes, then remove from pan.
    7. Make glaze: Stir together 1/4 c 7 UP & 1/2 c sugar in saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Boil 1 to 2 minutes until sugar is dissolved.
    8. Use toothpick to poke holes in top of warm cake. Spoon glaze over cake & allow to cool.

    what are the advantages/disadvantages to feeding grain vs grain free dog foods?

    Posted by admin on February 11th, 2010 and filed under grain | 5 Comments »

    hard time deciding what dog food to feed, but more towards grain free… My dane is currently on a grain free food – totw and the other dogs are on canidae- not grain free!
    we are looking into switching foods with all the ethoxyquin stuff going on with the foods
    what is the best grain free food?

    Ethoxyquin is a fish preservative …it has nothing to do with grains ,, and btw grains are bad for dogs.

    I have researched this in depth since my poor dog died of kidney failure due to poor quality dog food!!
