First Birthday Cake – How do I cut a cake into the number 1?

Posted by admin on March 5th, 2010 and filed under first | 5 Comments »

I have a 9 x 13 pan, and I want the final cake to look like a number one for a baby’s first birthday. I had a book with some ideas, but can’t find it anywhere.

Cut the 13 x 9 cake in half vertically. Use one vertical piece for the main part of the "one".

Then cut the second vertical piece in a 1:2 ratio…one piece is one-third of the vertical piece and the second is two-thirds of the vertical piece. Take the longer piece you just cut and center it up along the bottom of the "one".

Cut a corner diagonally off the smaller piece so it goes from one corner to about one-third down the long side. Snug that diagonal cut up against the left side of the top part of the "one". This should give you a nice "one" shape and give you a small snack at the same time!

Brush the crumbs off and frost as you wish.

What happens the first time you go to a clinic to get Birth Control pills?

Posted by admin on March 1st, 2010 and filed under first | 12 Comments »

I’m planning on going to Planned Parenthood to go on the pill for the first time. I’ve read everything that needs to be known about the pill. But what should I expect when I go get the pill for the first time? Any exams? How was your experience?

Pee test and well a pap smear or pelvic exam for sure and breast exam. I dont think you’ll have blood work though!

Who was the first woman to receive a PhD from a University in England?

Posted by admin on February 27th, 2010 and filed under first | 1 Comment »

Who was the first woman to receive a PhD from a University in England?
Also, who was the first English woman to receive a PhD from a university anywhere?

(I need the answer to the first question more)

I cannot locate the first female to recieve a Phd in the UK, only a MD.
I am wondering if it is because the English didn’t use the term Doctor for a Phd, at least a female one.
As you can see from the woman below who gained her Phd in Italy in the 1600’s, I’d venture to say it was around the mid-1880’s, and quite possibly before that.

Winifred Edgerton, the first American woman to receive a Ph.D. in mathematics, Columbia University, 1886 .

Elizabeth Blackwell (1821 – 1910) first woman physician (doctor), founded the New York Infirmary for Women and Children in 1857, founded Women’s Medical College in 1867

Elena Cornaro Piscopia (1646-1684), Italian mathematician and the first female PhD

What was the first colony the English tried to settle in colonial america?

Posted by admin on February 25th, 2010 and filed under first | 1 Comment »

What was the very first expedition or whatever that the english attempted when America was first discovered.

Roanoke was the first attempt. It failed.

Jamestown was the first permanent settlement.

What were the first stores and companies to be established in the world?

Posted by admin on February 23rd, 2010 and filed under first | 1 Comment »

I’m asking of the very first companies to be established and the stores that constructed first around the world.

I doubt you will find any records of the first businesses and stores. People have been selling merchandise and services to other people far back into ancient history. I did find an article from a 2007 issue of Business Week citing the end of the oldest continuously operatiing family business, a 1,400-year-old temple building business in Japan, which you may find interesting: http://www.businessweek.com/smallbiz/content/apr2007/sb20070416_589621.htm
