  • Can you cook bulgar wheat in a rice cooker?

Posted by admin on December 30th, 2009 and filed under wheat | 2 Comments »

Does anyone have experience doing this? Bulgar wheat is cooked so similarly to rice, so it seems like it could work in the rice cooker, but I don’t want to ruin my machine.

I thought Bulgar is typically soaked in hot water and does not really need to be cooked like rice.

However, rice cookers typically have an automatic shut-off (switches from cook mode to "keep" warm mode or off, if you have an old rice cooker) when a certain temperature is reached. That’s how it knows when the rice is done.

It shouldn’t ruin your machine if you cook something else other than rice.

How do I determine the grain of my lawn?

Posted by admin on December 30th, 2009 and filed under grain | 2 Comments »

I have twenty beautiful acres, and an equally nice, thriving lawn sitting on a two acre portion. The grass grows quickly, and we have never had to fertilize or even water it (rain is quite adequate). I want to make the lawn more beautiful by mowing properly, so…

? – How do I determine the grain of my lawn, and…

? – Do I mow with, against, or across the grain?

Thank you for all answers in advance.

The only way it would have a "grain" in the first place is if it was consitently mowed in one direction only.

Everything I read about making a nice lawn involves alternating the paths you take across the grass when mowing. Front to back once, side to side next time, diagonally the next. If you constantly go in one direction, you create a "grain" and lines in the lawn.

Does anyone have plans for building a cattle feeder from a plastic barrel?

I want to cut a plastic barrel in half length wise and make a small cattle feeder from it. What should I use for the base?

You could use plywood, or some rebar. Rebar would probably be sturdier. Just weld it together.

How can I become a Rural Firefighter in New Zealand?

Posted by admin on December 30th, 2009 and filed under rural | 1 Comment »

Rural Firefighters as in the Firefighters who fight forest fires and brush fires in the wilderness, not structure firefighters who fight fires in buildings in the city. Where can I apply to be a rural firefighter and when does the hiring start?

Check this site out, it has a lot of links and phone numbers.

    http://nrfa.fire.org.nz/Firenet/Regions/Rural/RuralFireAuthorities/

It looks like rural fire fighting is organised seperately by each district council so I guess you’d have to apply to the specific one in whatever area you’re interested in. If you’re looking for a career remember that most firefighters in New Zealand, even ones in the urban areas, are volunteers and so don’t get paid.
